2020-21: Reinventing Leadership in the Transatlantic Relationship

Thursday, January 28th, 2021, 10 am - 11:15 am EST

The newly inaugurated U.S. President Joe Biden is expected to reinvent the transatlantic relationship early in his presidency, markedly shifting the relationship established by the previous administration. What will an invigorated alliance look like? What are the specific challenges and opportunities that Russia poses to this alliance? How can the United States navigate these shoals in a manner that can reinvigorate U.S.-EU partnership?

This event will focus on more specific issues within the larger theme regarding the evolution of great power dimensions to transatlantic relations. It will be structured around a panel discussion to highlight specific issues, such as practical criteria for demonstrating the value of the transatlantic relationship, guidelines for tightening alignment of US-EU strategy towards Russia, and mutual avenues for mending conspicuous fissures in the alliance. The participants will be comprised of experts from both the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Each speaker will identify a vision, strategy, and practical steps for contending with this dynamic landscape, both among long-time allies and between emerging rivals. The entire event, including introductory remarks, will transpire over the course of 75 minutes and will be co-hosted by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
